How Sematext pricing is different
- 🙂 You will not be called by our sales people – we have 0 (zero) sales people at Sematext. Nobody will call you!
- 👌 You don't have to put your whole account on a paid plan. Our plans are per-App and can be changed at any point. What is an App? ?
- 😎 You have lots of control over your costs because you can use different plans, volumes, retention... for each App. Other vendors have account-level plans, data retention, etc. which means you pay for every single thing you send to their service.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What happens at the end of my trial?
- New users get a 14-days free trial for each new Logs App. At the end of the trial the App is automatically switched to the Basic (free) plan, unless you picked a paid plan. If you pick a paid plan before the trial period ends we will honour the full trial period.
- Can I cancel the service?
- Of course. You can simply stop sending us your logs or switch to the Basic plan.
- Do I need to sign a contract, do I have to commit?
- There are no contracts and no commitments. You can cancel any time. Price is metered and based on 3 factors: plan, daily volume, and data retention. You pick a plan based on which features you want. You pick volume based on the volume of logs you produce daily. The higher volume you pick the lower the cost per GB. You pick data retention depending on how long you need to keep your data. We charge at the end of the month. For longer term and large contracts please get in touch.
- Can I use multiple different plans?
- Yes. Each Logs App is independent and each Logs App can have a different plan. Each user account can have any number of Logs Apps.
- Can I run Sematext On Premises or in my Cloud?
- No. Sematext Cloud is a SaaS.
- What if I don’t know my daily log volume?
- Sematext displays your daily log volume. You can use that information to determine which plan best fits your needs. You will also see recommendatons for the most cost-effective daily log volume selection.
- What happens if I go over the daily volume specified in my plan?
- We keep accepting your logs. We keep track of the daily volume and charge based on the actual volume of data sent to us beyond the volume specified. Note that the bigger volume you specify in your plan the lower the price per GB. Thus, if you find that you often go over the volume you’ve specified you may pay less if you select a higher volume. Also, there is a hard daily log volume limit you can set for extra protection.
- How much time does set-up take?
- It can take as little as a few minutes, but it depends on how fast you are at configuring log shipping. When you create a Logs App we provide all needed configs for an array of log shipping tools.
- How does Sematext compare to in-house Elastic Stack / ELK Stack?
- The key difference that is often underestimated is that running Elasticsearch requires maintenance and tuning, and this requires both time and expertise. This is not immediately obvious, but becomes more and more costly as data volume (and the Elasticsearch cluster) grows. All of this adds up and ends up costing more time, money, and resources than using Sematext. See Sematext vs. ELK.
- How does Sematext compare to Splunk?
- It’s much more affordable. But there are also differences in features and benefits. Have a look at Sematext vs. Splunk.
- How does Sematext compare to Elastic Cloud?
- Glad you asked! Sematext is a fully managed log management solution, with built-in replication, data sharding, auto-scaling, backups, etc. There is nothing you need to manage, while with Elastic Cloud the underlying Elasticsearch cluster is still your responsibility. There is also a difference in cost. Please see Sematext vs. Elastic Cloud.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What happens at the end of my trial?
- New users get a 14-days free trial for each new Monitoring App. At the end of the trial the App is automatically switched to the Basic (free) plan, unless you selected a paid plan. If you pick a paid plan before the trial period ends we will honour the full trial period.
- Can I cancel the service?
- Of course. You can simply stop sending us metrics, or remove our agents, or switch to the Basic plan.
- Do I need to sign a contract, do I have to commit?
- There are no contracts and no commitments. You can cancel any time. Price is metered and based on the running time for the app / server being monitored. Note: Docker monitoring is based on the base price and per-container price. The base price includes monitoring of a Docker host and free monitoring of up to N containers. Per-container price is applied only if you run more than N containers per host. The number of containers per host is averaged for the whole account. The base price and the number of containers included in it depends on the plan. We charge at the end of the month. For longer term and large contracts please get in touch.
- Can I use multiple different plans?
- Yes. Each Monitoring App is independent and each App can have a different plan, including the free plan. Each user account can have any number of Apps.
- Can I run Sematext On Premises or in my Cloud?
- Yes, see Sematext Enterprise.
- How many servers or containers can I monitor?
- There are no limits to how many servers / instances / nodes / containers you can monitor for Apps with a paid plan.
- Do I have to create my own charts and reports?
- You don’t have to, though you can. Sematext gives you instant gratification. It knows what type of application you are monitoring and gives you a number of charts out of the box, neatly grouped into multiple reports and filterable by tags appropriate for each collected metric. As soon as you install the agent Sematext will start providing valuable performance insights.
- Can I graph my own custom metrics?
- Yes. You can send your custom metrics, chart them, alert on them, apply on anomaly detection on them, create custom dashboards with them, correlate them with other metrics, events, and logs.
- How does Sematext compare to New Relic? Datadog? Splunk? Elastic Cloud? AppDynamics?
- Sematext is 4-5 times cheaper than New Relic APM. For more information see Sematext vs. New Relic. Datadog appears more affordable, but forces you to pick a paid plan for your whole account. Sematext, on the other hand, lets you assign plans to each individual App. This way you can select the most optimal plan for each App, including the free plan. This is a major difference whose cost-saving value becomes apparent once you start using Sematext. AppDynamics is rich, but very expensive and focused primarily on large enterprises and on premises deployments – see Sematext vs. AppDynamics.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use multiple different plans?
- Yes. Each Experience App is independent and each App can have a different plan. Each user account can have any number of Apps.
- Can I cancel the service?
- Of course. You can simply stop sending us your logs or switch to the Basic plan.
- How do I know which plan to choose? (What is the best plan for me?)
- We recommend going through the trial period to see how much data you receive (PVs), how many alerts you need, etc. Then after the trial period you can pick the plan that matches your monthly page views and functionality needs. Keep in mind that the higher number of page views you select as part of our plans (Standard & Pro) means you benefit from a volume discount.
- What happens if I exceed my PV (Page View) volume?
- If you surpass your PV limit for that day or month data will stop being shipped to your Sematext Experience App. By default, your monthly PVs are staggered, meaning that we derive a daily PV limit from your monthly PV selection and then stop accepting data for the rest of the day - until 00:00 UTC - when and if that daily limit was reached. You can choose whether to disable staggering, and you can also configure your daily limit manually for even more control and flexibility.
- What happens at the end of my trial?
- At the end of the trial your Experience App is automatically disabled, unless you have set up your payment info. If you have set up payment info, we will automatically start charging based on the selected plan.
- Do I need to sign a contract, do I have to commit?
- There are no contracts and no commitments. You can cancel any time. Price is metered and based on 3 factors: plan, number of PVs, and data retention. You pick a plan based on which features you want. You pick PVs based on the number of monthly page views your website or webapp received. The higher the PVs and the longer the data retention the lower the per-PV rate. You pick data retention depending on how long you need to keep your data. We charge at the end of the month. For longer term and large contracts please get in touch.
- How do I integrate this in my website or webapp?
- It's as simple as adding Google Analytics to your website. See here. There are also simple integrations for React, Vue.js, Angular.js, Angular 2+, and Ember.
- What is a Geo report?
- A Geo report displays the world heat map that shows how location affects your website visitors’ experience.
- What is the On-Page Transactions feature?
- You can use On-Page Transactions to track any kind of UI interaction. For example, you can track how long it takes for your app to load all the initial data, or you can ensure that some critical part of your UI always finishes in under 200ms. Read more about this feature by clicking here.
- What are custom tags?
- Filtering by browser, operating system, city, etc. are known as basic tags. Custom tags are anything defined specifically for your visitors (Example: if your visitor is a paying customer or not).

Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the locations to run the monitors?
- Sematext Synthetics monitors can be scheduled to run from multiple locations around the globe. For the latest list of locations, refer to the Locations section in our documentation.
- What is a monitor?
- A monitor denotes a single HTTP endpoint or web site or user-journey you want to monitor. The monitor is scheduled to run periodically from configured locations and the results are evaluated based on configured conditions. There are 2 types of monitors: HTTP and Browser monitor. HTTP monitor can be used to monitor API endpoints, Web URL or any HTTP endpoint. Browser monitor can be used to monitor website performance and user journeys.
- What is a run?
- A run is a single execution of the monitors from a location. For example, a monitor configured to run every 1 minute from 2 locations, will create 2 runs every minute or 86400 runs a month.
- How do I know how many monitors or runs I will need?
- This depends on your monitoring requirements. Below are a few examples:
- · Global availability and performance - 1 HTTP monitor every minute from 5 locations (216000 runs a month) and 1 browser monitor every 30 mins from 5 locations (7200 runs a month).
- · API performance monitoring - 5 HTTP monitors every 5 mins from 3 locations (129600 runs a month). The number of locations depends on where the majority of your customers are located.
- · Competitive benchmarking - 3 browser monitors every 1 hr from 1 location (2160 runs a month). The number of browser monitors depends on the number of competitors you want to benchmark with.
- · User journey monitoring - 5 browser monitors every 30 mins from 1 location (7200 runs a month). The number of browsers depends on the number of unique user journeys you want to monitor.
- What happens when I use up all monitors or runs?
- When you reach the monitor or run limit for a plan, you need to move to a higher plan which allows more monitors and runs. Else you could also create a new App, with the same plan and add the new monitors in this App.
- What is a user journey?
- A user journey is the sequence of actions a user performs while navigating your website. For example, in the case of an e-commerce website a common user journey is login, search, select product, add to cart and checkout. With a browser monitor, you can simulate this user's actions using a browser script and verify if all the above steps are working correctly and meet your performance criteria at each step. This is also known as click path or web transactions.
- How many APIs or user journeys can I monitor?
- The number of APIs or user journeys you can monitor per App is based on the plan. Note that you can have as many Apps as you wish.
- Can I monitor HTTP endpoints/websites that are behind a firewall?
- Currently, we do not support a list of static IP addresses that can be whitelisted in your firewall. If your firewall supports whitelisting based on HTTP headers, we add fixed headers to HTTP requests sent from HTTP monitor. You can customize the Browser monitor script and add similar headers.
- Will I get charged if the Synthetics App or all the monitors inside the App are disabled?
- No. The App needs to record a minimum of 60 HTTP runs or 6 Browser runs in a day to be charged for that day.
- Can I monitor multiple page loads / navigation in a single browser monitor?
- You can script a user journey with multiple page loads in a single browser monitor. However, the page load metrics will be recorded only for the lastest page load in the script. For example, if your script loads the home page and navigates to the login page, only the page load metrics for the login page will be recorded.
- Can I use multiple different plans?
- Yes. Each Synthetics App is independent and each App can have a different plan. Each user account can have any number of Apps.
- Can I change to a different plan later?
- Yes, you can change plans at any time. If the newer plan does not support your current active monitors or runs limit, you might have to disable a few monitors or adjust the configuration to meet the new plan limit.
- Can I cancel the service?
- Of course. You can also disable any App. When you disable an App the monitors under the App won't be scheduled for execution. You won't be charged if there are no runs for your App. You can also fully delete any App at any time and even close your whole account all by yourself.
- What happens at the end of my trial?
- At the end of the trial your Synthetics App is automatically disabled, unless you have set up your payment info. If you have set up payment info, we will automatically start charging based on the selected plan.
- Is HTTPS supported?
- Yes. What's more we'll notify you about your SSL certificate expiring 7 days before its expiration date.
